Come to the annual SND workshop, win a job!
That was our promise, as 2006 site chairs of the world's largest gathering of visual journalists, to members of the rising generation who just needed a break. We gave them that, and they gave us back so much more.
The goal: Identify 10 promising students who need a job but have few professional connections. Secure a grant to underwrite their attendance at the annual workshop of the Society for News Design in Orlando. Make the students rock stars on the world stage and see which three will win paid internships after days of zany competition.
Day one: Individual interviews and a team challenge to create a front page. At 4 a.m., we roused them with the fictitious news of Osama Bin Laden's death and made them redo their pages in their pajamas!
Day two: A visual scavenger hunt at DisneyWorld! Each contestant was required to design a page with photos they shot that day - but only after we made them swap images with someone else.
Day three: A documentary of the experience was shown to workshop attendees, who voted on the final three to duke it out in a live quiz show. Of course, this was just the start of our years-long relationships as their stars continue to rise.
Joey, Billy, Nina, Bill, Me, Stephen and Carrie reuniting at the five year mark. <3
